SUNDAY
MALAYSIAN DIVERSITY
THE BAND
The WVC EnsembleFormed in 2006 as a trio, WVC completed its quartet line up with the addition of saxophonist Julian Chan. The group has toured extensively in the region, heralding back the spirit being "on the road" of touring jazz bands of old. Through these regional tours, WVC has brought its music to many corners of Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Macau.
WVC has been invited to appear in many festivals in the region such as Taichung Jazz Festival, Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival, Phuket International Jazz Festival, UCSI International Jazz Fest, Tianjin International Jazz Fest, Macau International Jazz Week, Tianjin May Music Festival, KL Arts Fest and many others. In addition, the band has played extensively in the Malaysian local jazz clubs, from No Black Tie, Alexis, Nero Fico and many others. The present incarnation of the WVC consists of band leader/composer/arranger/music director/pianist Tay Cher Siang, bassist AJ, drummer KJ Wong and saxophonist Julian Chan. The band remains one of the most active units in the Malaysian performance circuit and is one of the most sought after jazz bands in Malaysia for Hi-Fi recordings and live performances. To complete the swing jazz ensemble, WVC will be joined by Khairul Anwar on trumpets and Muhammad Nazrin on guitar. |
Hetty Kate“She’s truly one of the best swing-style vocalists (I’m talking 1940, Benny Goodman style 4/4 swing) on the current scene...” - Will Friedwald’s Clip Joint NYC
Pure of tone, sweet sounding and dangerously infectious, jazz vocalist Hetty Kate has performed for packed dance floors from New York to New Zealand. Perhaps best known in Lindy circles for her top selling album “Gordon Webster meets Hetty Kate”, Hetty has also released seven albums of her own, and is distributed in Australia (ABC Jazz), Japan (Disk Union) and New Zealand (Universal Music). Never short of a quick quip and cheeky lyric to make your partner smile, Hetty’s voice is instantly recognisable, and has been compared to Peggy Lee, Doris Day and a young Ella Fitzgerald. Her innate rhythm and sense of swing has made her a musician’s favourite around the world and a perfect pairing for a night of dancing. Outside of the Lindy-hop scene, Hetty has performed at jazz festivals in Europe, Asia, North America, New Zealand and Australia, has been the featured vocalist for twelve symphonic performances (including the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). She has sung at the Sydney Opera House, and toured extensively with Australian jazz luminary James Morrison for three years. Hetty has recently relocated from Melbourne, Australia to Paris, France and is enjoying being part of the vibrant European jazz scene whilst still touring internationally. Thrilled to be visiting Kuala Lumpur for the first time, and excited to join such a great band, Hetty can’t wait to share a weekend of swing delights with you! |
